Czech Statistical Office – Production, recovery and disposal of waste and production of secondary raw materials in 2019

07. November 2019

An important report was presented at the end of October by the Czech Statistical Office – Annual Report on the Production, Recovery and Disposal of Waste and the Production of Secondary Raw Materials.

The main observation for the work of the Energy financial group is that the amount of biodegradable waste has not changed and that, as in 2017, it remains at 179 kg per capita, ie 1.9 million tonnes in total.
The year-on-year increase in the amount of composting by 4.7 percentage points is attributable to higher municipalities’ activity in the distribution of brown waste containers.
Otherwise, the statistics show nothing encouraging when the level of landfill has increased by 30 percentage points.
The end of the year is approaching and we may wish wise heads to assess the state of affairs and encourage the use of wastes that change their quality over time – decompose to produce greenhouse gases (as biodegradable waste), or otherwise deteriorate (as such as bark beetle calamity). Legislation resulting from the Energy Strategy of the Czech Republic and international commitments (Paris Conference, Kyoto Protocol) should include incentives to make the planet breathe better.
